translating from the Swedish...
Confessing to an obsession with the Larsson trilogy...
& realizing a few problems with some word choices by
the translator...
Specifically..the casual greeting to a friend: "Hi!"
Is that really the word in common usage in Sweden?*
It seems such an "Americanism" !
Is the Kappa aware of anyone whose mother tongue
is Swedish??
And then that sudden appearance of another chapter posted
to Goddess of Idun's "Donatello and the Swede Syndrome" !!
********
An elongated session of pm-ing ensues...
Too bad the author has/had no desire to read the
"Dragon Tattoo" trilogy....but there was a sufficient
exchange of data that I come to the conclusion that
the translator TOOK LIBERTIES with the original!
Upon reflection, I think he was trying to insert not-quite
right terms/words to make the material acceptable/understood
by the reader of 'popular' fiction in the US.
***********
here's a few he missed:
'crispbread'
'rich as a troll' (LOL!)
***********
*Idun told me that the usual greeting would be the Swedish: "hej"
(pronounced: "hey!")
