"A story is made up of words and characters. Are the words well chosen and do the characters live? All the rest is literary gossip."

My six decade love affair with the English language compels me to offer a list of authors whose work meets my critical standards. The single criterion operant is the quality of the prose as composed by the writers. I have made no discrimination whatsoever as to subject matter, theme, or plot.

Therefore be warned!

A great many of the works here listed may involve themes or subjects repugnant to some readers. I can only advise that if a particular story cannot be stomached, go on to the next; you will find at least a few to be to your taste.

apropos...

rectifying a certain error observed recently...
bath is the noun,
bathe is the verb.
***
breath is the noun,
breathe is the verb.
*****
as you may have surmised, I am posting here
those 'awkwardnesses' that I notice in the
stories that I read in the T-fics.
(since I do not 'review'-for reasons already given-
the comments I might have made are here posted)
****
Queue(n)a file of persons or vehicles waiting in line in
the order of their arrival-sometimes spelled:cue.
***
Cue(n)the closing words of an actor's speech, serving as a
signal for his successor...syns:catchword, hint, suggestion.
n.b.:cued, cuing

added 6-20: The Discovery channel recently aired
an Urban Explorers venture into the NYC sewer system.
Investigators were trying to discover whether or not
conditions were conducive to the survival of those discarded
exotic pets, namely crocodiles and alligators.
Sources of food, rats and insects, were found to be
in plentiful supply. It was noted that clumping
of non-biodegrading matter was widespread.
The consulting herpetologists were positive that such
'islands' of solid waste would provide quite acceptable
nesting sites.
A unsuspected factoid emerged when temperature
readings were examined. Surprisingly, there were
indications that a high degree of warmth prevailed 'down there'.
Numbers were often well into three digits.
(excursus:fanon references to the uncomfortable chill
of the sewers may need revision.)

3-15-10: May I recommend that book by Lynn Truss?
You know the one..."Eats(,)Shoots and Leaves"
It contains a very readable section on that horrible creature..
the Apostrophe !!!
Basically, the creature stands in place of a letter that is not there.
(Ahem..This recommendation is for those writers who seem to be a bit
confused about the difference between a certain possessive pronoun
and the past participle of a conjugated verb.)
to wit: ITS is the possessive form of the neuter pronoun....and
IT'S is a contraction of the verb form IT IS....
Horribly, I have run across this error in the writing of even
some of the very best creators.
