"A story is made up of words and characters. Are the words well chosen and do the characters live? All the rest is literary gossip."

My six decade love affair with the English language compels me to offer a list of authors whose work meets my critical standards. The single criterion operant is the quality of the prose as composed by the writers. I have made no discrimination whatsoever as to subject matter, theme, or plot.

Therefore be warned!

A great many of the works here listed may involve themes or subjects repugnant to some readers. I can only advise that if a particular story cannot be stomached, go on to the next; you will find at least a few to be to your taste.

another insect....(bugging me)

from Movie-Since we are to assume that
no one knows who the Nightwatcher is--
therefore, it is axiomatic that, of course,
'he' is a human being--
so then, why does Leo go looking for 'him'
on a sort of vigilante pilgrimage of his own--
even tho' he has, from early childhood, been
conditioned not to allow himself to
be seen by humans??
(excursus:if my chronology of event sequence
is off here, somebody say so...I only saw
the thing seven times-& I may not be
remembering sequencing accurately)
Leo sets off after Sensei has hinted that
he must get the team together-meaning that
it is his duty to hunt down his brother Raphael
and bring him home.
(scene: Splinter sez his thing, Leo stalks up
the stairs after saying: "Yes, Sensei.")
all this takes place after their first encounter
with one of the 13 beasts-which conflict was
preceded by the assembly on the roof
wherein Leo made some disparaging
remarks about the Nightwatcher--
and was immediately confronted by
Raphael and his "took up the slack" accusation.
do you suppose... in that moment of
his brother's refutation -hotly and emphatically
expressed-Leo begins to have some suspicions?
because- he does go looking for this 'vigilante'
and when he finally chases, corners and confronts 'him'-
--we see him pacing back and forth,
LECTURING!!! (where have we seen that before?)
here's this mutant turtle-in plain sight of a
human-(supposed) & making no effort to conceal himself
**
uh-huh... I do think Leo knows who the Nightwatcher
really is---
So, when the helmet comes off ..
I think I hear an exclamation point along with
the question mark as Leo shouts: "RAPH?!"
***
some of Leo's remarks during the pre-fight
go-round- about anger causing defeat- are just a
little too 'pointed' at a certain hot-headed brother
for there to be any doubt that he (Leo) knows all
too well just who he's facing..
****
oh, by the way..(FYI)
Surely, you do realize that there's all
sorts of trouble this no-responsibilities
elderly female could get into
if she didn't have this particular obsession
with the effects of teratogenic agents
on phenotypes to keep her
out of mischief... ??

I agree it is sort of odd that Splinter tells Leo, "You know what you must do," and Leo takes that to mean he is supposed to go pick a fight with the Nightwatcher and reveal himself to a human. Huh?

My take is that he didn't really know, but he did. Perhaps he was so completely frustrated in his attempts to reclaim his leadership that he went after "Nightwatcher" to work out some of that anger. Not being able to say all those things to Raphael at that point may have fueled the impulse to "lecture" and make snide remarks about his temper, but I think it was one of those things where at one level you know something, but you don't realize you know it. Nightwatcher grabbed his attention, "hooked" him and infuriated him for, really, no particularly good reason. I think he "knew" subconsciously exactly who it was, but his conscious mind was telling him something else so he could justify the attack.

OK, so have I just put my favorite Turtle on the couch? Wouldn't be the first time--lol!
